With Joel Embiid sidelined with a facial injury, the Philadelphia 76ers needed James Harden to lead the team against the No. 1-seeded Miami Heat in the second round. Harden however, failed to rise to the occasion in Game 1. Using a dominant defensive effort and a strong performance from Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro, Miami easily took care of Philadelphia in Game 1, winning 106-92. Mariano Rivera Jersey Miami now leads the second-round series 1-0. Harden finished the game with just 16 points on 5-of-13 shooting (38.5 percent) in a little over 34 minutes of action. He did have nine rebounds and five a sists but also recorded a game-high five turnovers. Harden got to the free-throw line just four times (he did make all four of his attempts) and shot just New York Yankees 28.6 percent from three, going 2 for 7 from deep. To be fair to Harden, he played excellent in the first half. After Miami built a 13 point lead and looked in control of the game, Harden helped to lead a Philly comeback in the second quarter. He aggre sively attacked Miami's elite defense, taking it to the rim and setting a pace that his teammates fed off. Thanks to Harden's play, the Sixers went into halftime up by one. Harden gives the Sixers their FIRST lead of the night NBA on TNT (@NBAonTNT) The second half however, was a Wade Boggs Jersey totally different story. Led by Jimmy Butler, PJ Tucker and Bam Adebayo, Miami ratcheted uptheir defense by executing harder switches and crowding Philly on the perimeter. This level of intensity by Miami had a dramatic effect on Harden and the Sixers as their offense just fell apart. The 76ers shot 0- Randy Johnson Jersey 10 from 3-pt off James Harden's pa ses. That was tied for the worst 3-pt shooting off a player's pa ses in the last 8 playoffs. The Celtics shot 0-10 on threes off Isaiah Thomas' pa ses in 2016. ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) Harden in the second half scored just four points on 1-of-5 shooting. He also had just one a sist and recorded two turnovers. Not great to say the least. With Embiid out, the Sixers could be in for a short series if Harden doesn't step up.Harden has to play like the top 75 player of all-time, one-time MVP and 10-time All-Star that he is. Miami's defense is elite but Harden can control the pace of the game by being more aggre sive, Aaron Hicks Jersey attacking down hill and creating opportunities for his teammates. Simply put, Harden needs to take way more than 13 shots if the Sixers want to pick up a win while Embiid is injured. "Well get better. We will settle into the series," Harden told reporters postgame. "Obviously, we are mi sing Joel. Its something thats out of our control, but weve got to go out there and man up and be great. I know we will because we are resilient. Harden and the Don Larsen Jersey Sixers will have an opportunity to "be great" in Game 2 on Wednesday.

After it was announced that Bam Adebayo and Goran Dragic on Friday night, many fans on Twitter were willing to call the game a wash and pronounce the Lakers winners. Adebayo has been a defensive savant in the paint andprovided plenty of offense. He is the team's third-leading scorer in the playoffs, averaging 17.8 points,to go with 10.9 rebounds and 4.6 a sists in 35.9 minutesper game. Dragic has been the Heat's second-leading scorer this postseasonbehind Jimmy Butler, averaging 19.9 points along Sean Rodriguez Jersey with 4.6 a sists in 33.4 minutes per game. Still, the show must go on. There will be a Game 2, which means Miami coach Erik Spoelstra needs to figure out how to replace his do-it-all big man and his veteran point guard. Here are a few ways he could approach that challenge: Players who could replace Goran DragicSG Tyler Herro (16 postseason games;16.3 points, 3.9 a sists in 33.1 minutes per game) Herro is the obvious option to plug into the starting lineup. He hasn't started a game the entire postseason but he has played starter's minutes off the bench. He has been very effective on the offensive end, although he will have to find some of the magic he had in his 37-point performance in Game 4of the Eastern Conference finals if the Heat are to challenge Mike Schmidt Jersey the Lakers more than they did in Game 1. Most points in a Playoff gameAge 20 or younger42: Magic Johnson37: TYLER HERRO *36: Derrick Rose34: Brandon Jennings29: Tony Parker* Off the bench Ballislife.com (@Ballislife) Even if Herro is able to replicate that kind of performance, Miami will still need other players off the bench to step up. NBA FINALS: G Kendrick Nunn (10 games;4.7 points, 1.1 a sists in 12.4 minutes per game) The undrafted wing had an excellent regular season, averaging 15.3 points and 3.3 a sists in 29.3 minutes per game to earnFirst Team All-Rookie honors. His performance in the playoffs has beenabysmal, to the point he fell out of the regular rotation. He is Lenny Dykstra Jersey shooting 38.5 percent from the field and 20.8 percent from 3-point range in the postseason. Hemay have played himself back into the rotation in Game 1 of the Finals, however, after scoring 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting (2 of 4 from 3)in 20 minutes. If he can give the Heat a similar lift off the bench in Game 2, then they might still stand a fighting chance. Will Middlebrooks Jersey F Andre Iguodala (16 games;4.2 points, 1.6 a sists in 19.8 minutes per game) Don't count on seeing Iguodala run the point at any point, but with Herro getting a bump in minutes as the primary ballhandler, you can expect to see more of the 2015 Finals MVP on the wing. The Heat acquired the 36-year-old vet because of his experience in these kinds of games, so anticipate himbecomingeven more involved as the series goes on. Players who could replace Bam AdebayoF/C Kelly Olynyk (13 games;5.8 points, 4.2 rebounds in 12.5 minutes per game) Things didn't go all that well for Olynykin Game 1:He had four points on 1-of-5 shooting in 18 minutes. He didpull down fiverebounds and dish out four a sists, however. He isn't going to provide nearly the same level of defense as Adebayo, but if he can rediscover his shooting stroke he made 40.6 percent of 3-point attemptsin the regular season compared to just 29.4 percent thus far in the postseason then he could give the Heat the spacingneeded to make shooters like Herro and Duncan Robinson more effective. F/C Meyers Leonard (Onegame;Zeropoints, zerorebounds, twoa sists in nineminutes) This feels like a ma sive long shot. Leonard hasn't played since Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals vs. the Bucks, and he didn't contribute much then. But he was an effective role player in the regular Carlos Santana Jersey season, averaging 6.1 points and 5.1 rebounds in 20.3 minutes per game. Spoelstra hasshortened his bench in the postseason, which has left Meyers without a role, but he'll likely see some action in Game 2. Similarly Nick Williams Jersey to Olynyk, he shot 41.9 percent from 3-point range this season, so it's po sible he could find a rhythm and earn more playing time the restof the series. F Jae Crowder (16 games;12.3 points, 5.5 rebounds in 31.0 minutes per game) Don't be surprised if Spoelstra takes a page out of Mike D'Antoni's playbook and goes with a no-big lineup, with Crowder as the biggest player on the floor at 6-6 and235 pounds. Crowder has been playing most of his minutes as a small-ball four. Spoelstra will likely look to avoid such lineups when LA's Anthony Davis and Dwight Howard are in the game, but it will allowhim to put his best five offensive players on the floor together.

The Philadelphia 76ers find themselves down 1-0 Duke Snid Jersey in their second round series after losing Game 1 to the Miami Heat, 106-92. In the absence of Joel Embiid, Doc Rivers opted to start veteran DeAndre Jordan at center. Jordan struggled against the Heat's frontline, finishing with just four points and two rebounds in his 17 minutes. Philadelphia outscored the Heat byeight points in the 31 minutes Jordan was on the bench. MORE: Heat big man Bam Adebayo had a field day in Game 1, going off for 24 points, 12 rebounds, four a sists, two steals and a block, shooting 8-of-10 from the field as he took advantage of Embiid's absence. StatMuse (@statmuse) While trying to replace Embiid's presence is no easy feat, the 76ers found limited succe s with any of their options at center. Paul Reed was the best of the bunch, recording four points, nine rebounds, four a sists, one steal and one block in 13 minutes of action. Dylan Floro Jersey But Reed was limited due to foul trouble, picking up five in just 13 minutes. Paul Millsap went scorele s in his six minutes, while Georges Niang also had zero points on 0-of-7 shooting from the field (all from 3) in his 22 minutes. For now, it looks like Jordan has to be the man in the middle for Philly. LATEST NBA BETTING TRENDS: | | Celtics vs. Warriors: Best player prop bets for Game 4 Klay Thompson OVER 20.5 points Thompson has had his well-documented struggles this postseason, but it hasnt Logan Morrison Jersey been as bad as its being made out to be. What really matters here is his improvement as a series goes on, going from 15 points a game in the first two games of every series in the playoffs to 22.4 for the rest of the series (entering Wednesday). He lived up to that trend in Game 3, putting in 25 points and making five triples in the lo s to Boston. With Steph Curry (left foot) a bit banged up, more will fall on the other Splash Brothers shoulders in Game 4, and hes shown he can handle that. Nick Ashooh Draymond Green UNDER 7.5 points Green has gone 5-of-19 shooting from the field and 5-of-10 from Brian Dozier Jersey the free-throw line through three games in this series, averaging just 5.0 points per game in the proce s. He was a complete non-factor as a scorer in Games 1 and 3 when he scored four and two points, respectively, Paul Molitor Jersey and he had very tough individual matchups against Al Horford and Robert Williams III. I expect his lack of scoring to continue in Game 4, especially since hes asked to do so much defensively against Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Green has also fouled out twice in three games and is always a threat to get ejected due to technical fouls. Given his comments about the Boston faithful after Game 3, its safe to say he will be in a tense atmosphere in this one. Dan Karpuc Jayson Tatum OVER 26.5 points I think Jason Castro Jersey Tatum is really going to step it up in this game when it comes to points and hit this OVER by a lot. He had "only" 26 points in Game 3, but he scored 28 points in Game 2 and I see him putting up even more in Game 4 tonight. Especially with the TD Garden crowd behind him, which will most certainly be fueled by Klay Thompsons recent comments about the Celtics fanbase. After the Game 3 win, I think Tatum will be extra inspired to go the distance and soar OVER this points total. It's been a strange, challenging season for Celtics forward Jayson Al Kaline Jersey Tatum and that's putting it mildly. The two-time All-Star had to bounce back quickly after a long stint in the NBA's Florida bubble ended with eliminationin the 2020 Eastern Conference finals. Boston lost Gordon Hayward to Charlotte during the free-agency period, placingeven more responsibilityon Tatum's shoulders. The Celtics have struggled with injuries (most notably Marcus Smart's calf strain), inconsistent play and COVID-19 i sues. MORE: Tatum isone of the many NBAplayers who has tested positive for COVID-19 this season and mi sed games as part of the league's health and safety protocols. He admitted thathe wasdealing with lingering effectsmore than a month after his initial test results revealed he had contracted the virus. "I think it me ses with your breathing a little bit," . "I have experienced some games where, I don't want to say I was struggling to breathe, but, you know, you get fatigued a lot quicker than normal.Just running up and down the court a few times, it's easier to get out of breath or tired a lot faster. "I've noticed that since I've had COVID. It's just something I'm working on." And yet, despite all the difficulties, Tatum is still having arguably his best year as a pro. Entering Tuesday night's game against the Jazz, Tatum was averaging a career-high 25.1 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.5 a sists per game while shooting 44.5 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from 3-point range. While Boston has not lived up to expectations, it is very much in the thick of the East playoff race. Sowhat can we expect from Tatum and his teammates in Sparky Anderson Jersey the second half of the 2020-21 campaign?Sporting News talked with the 23-year-oldon Monday about the state of the Celtics and much more. (Editor's note: This interview has been lightly edited for clarity.) Sporting News: Before we get to anything about the Celtics, I know you spoke openly last month about the effects of COVID-19 and feeling fatigued on the floor. How are you feeling now? Are you still feeling those physical effects? Jayson Tatum: I think there for sure have been steady improvements. From everyone else that I've talked to that has experienced what I'm going through, they said it's just kind of a proce s, and it does take some time to kind of fully recover from a conditioning standpoint where it's not really affecting your breathing while you're playing. It's getting better. I think that's all you can ask for. SN: Have you talked to other guys within Shane Greene Jersey the league who have dealtwith similar i sues? Do you as NBA players have a feel for how are others are doing within your own small basketball community? JT: Yeah, I've talked to guys that are in the NBA, and I've talked to guys in other leagues. Just kind of talk about what they had to deal with, how they recovered, how they felt afterward getting back to playing in their respective sports. I did have a conversation with a couple different guys. SN: With where we're at in the season going into the second half, how do you feel about this team and the roster as you have it currently constructed? And moving forward, what do you think that youhave to do in order to be considered among that elite championship tier? JT: I think, now that everyone is healthy, obviously we feel like a different team. We're Joe Jimenez Jersey playing like a different team. Just having everyone back together is a big part of it. With the roster situation, that's not really for me to say. My job and everyone else's job in that locker room is to go out there and play to the best of our abilities, help win games. Those decisions are above us. I feel like each and every person brings something different to the table that we need. So, I like our team. We've been playing better as of late, and hopefully we continue to improve on that. SN: What do you think is thefactor that will allow the Celtics to get wins at a consistent level and take that momentum into the playoffs? JT: I think just being more consistent throughout a game, whether we have the lead, maintaining that or you're not gonna be perfect throughout agame. Butjust not getting beat on things that we walk through in practice, things that we watch film over or go over in walkthrough, being secure on that stuff. Obviously,it's the NBA. Guys are gonna make plays and hit some shots, but not making it easy for them. Try to take stuff like that away. It's just the detailed things that we can do better. SN: One of the biggest things for your team just recently was the return of Marcus Smart and what he brings on both ends of the floor. Not that you didn't know there would be some sort ofimpact when he wasn't able to play, but how much of a lift does he provide? JT: Obviously,Smart is really, really, really good and a very key part of our team. We sure mi sed him,his presence and all those intangible things that he does on a nightly basis that may not nece sarily show up on the stat sheet. SN: Robert Williams has been playing well. He had a season-high 16 points in a win over the Rockets. How have you seen him progre s as a young player and fill that role as a vertical threat and a rim protector? Coming into the league, I think everybody knew he had the tools, but he's been putting it together. JT: I love Rob. He works extremely hard. He's gotten so much better to where he's a key part of our team. We Tyson Ross Jersey need him to be succe sful, and he Brandon Dixon Jersey knows that. He's taken on that responsibility, and it shows. Rob is gonna be special. I truly believe that. SN: Is there a certain part of his game or something that he's done that's really stuck out to you? Something that he's done on a game-to-game basis? JT: I think his talk, him talking on the floor, which people may not recognize. But being on the floor with him, just hearing his voice and his presence especially on the defensive end, I feel like it's gotten so much better than his first year in the league. SN: Is that something that just takes time generally speaking, not even specific to Rob to be able to find your voice in the league and grow comfortable addre sing your teammates? JT: Yeah, especially depending on your personality, you've gotta get comfortable with yourself, comfortable with the situation and your teammates. From guy to guy, that varies, how long it takes. But he's figured it out. SN: I know there's the internet joke about you always being 19 years old, but you've also grown into an All-Star and rea

John Beilein has stepped down as Cavaliers coach, ,and a sociate coach J.B. Bickerstaff will take the reins of the team in a full-time capacity. Beilein's tenure was short-lived with few positives to take away Trevor Cahill Jersey . He rarely appeared on the same page as his players, and had a well-documented in which he called players "thugs" that he apologized for. Cleveland went 14-40 under his watch. MORE: The Cavaliershopethey can now find some much-needed stability with Bickerstaff at the helm. Here's a look at the new full-time head coach, who has prior experience in this position with two other organizations: Who is J.B. Bickerstaff? Bickerstaff, the son of former NBA coach Raul Mondesi Jersey Bernie Bickerstaff, played college basketball at Oregon State and Minnesota. Bickerstaff joined the staff of the Charlotte Bobcats as an a sistant in 2004 and spent three seasons there beforemoving on to a sistant roles with the Timberwolves and Rockets. He waspromoted to the Rockets' interim head coach position on Nov. 8, 2015,after Kevin McHale was fired. Houston went 37-34 under Bickerstaffand lost in the first round of the playoffs to the top-seeded Warriors. While that team was viewed as a disappointment following the 56-win season of the previous year, an incoherent roster featuringlittle help around James Hardenwaslargely Paulo Orlando Jersey to blame.Dwight Howard was miscast, Clint Capela had yet to emerge and inefficient veterans littered the team's rotation. That offseason, from the Rockets' head coaching searchandjoined theGrizzlies in an a sociate head coach role. On Nov. 27, 2017, Bickerstaff was once again promoted to interim head coach after the Grizzlies fired David Fizdale. Memphis went 15-48 in Bickerstaff's first season and mi sed the playoffs. Still, the Grizzlies promoted Bickerstaff to a Terrance Gore Jersey full-time rolefor the 2018-19 season. After another playoff mi s, though, Memphis fired him. Inthree seasons as a head coach (two in an interim position), Bickerstaff has compiled a record of 85-131 (.394 winning percentage). What does J.B. Bickerstaff have to work with? Not much. The Cavaliers are just about the most dysfunctional team in the league right now, Chris Owings Jersey with perhaps only the Knicks in worse shape. They have two centers who can't shoot and are likely to be free agents this offseason (Andre Drummond, Tristan Thompson), a veteran forward unhappy to be wasting his final productive years on a losing team (Kevin Love) and a cast of youngsters yet to prove themselves capable of becoming franchise cornerstones (Collin Sexton, Darius Garland, Kevin Porter Kelvin Herrera Jersey Jr.). Any sign of progre s, then, would be seen as a succe s for Bickerstaff, and he could gain a high-caliber rookie in the upcoming draft cla s. As long as the Cavaliers' 2020 pick lands in the top 10, they get to keep it.

Alex Verdugo Jersey The SN Rushmore project named four pro athletes from the 13 cities that have had at least four of the following five leagues represented for at least 20 years NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, WNBA. While there were no hard-and-fast rules pertaining to the athletes selected, our panel of experts considered individual resumes, team succe s and legacy within the sports landscape of each city. Multiple players from the same franchise were allowed, and not every franchise needed to be represented. All sports fans have an opinion on this topic. This is ours. Some cities in our Mt. Rushmore series produced heated debates on which athletes should be included, creeping into every office conversation for weeks (Im looking at you, Philadelphia). Chicagos lasted about 15 minutes. Producing some of the greatest profe sional athletes of all time can have that effect. Jerry Reinsdorf may have gotten Harold Baines into the Baseball Hall of Fame, but no amount of lobbying from the Bulls and White Sox owner was going to change our top four. MORE: Michael Jordan is more synonymous with Chicago than deep dish pizza. Walter Payton has spawned half a century of Chicago children stutter-stepping and stiff-arming friends in neighborhood football games. Even those who mi sed seeing him Steve Pearce Jersey play by decades know the name Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks. And Bobby Hull ended a 22-year Stanley Cup drought for an original six franchise with his dominance in the 1960s. Chicago is one of the best sports cities in the world. Its only fitting that these four premier athletes grace its Mount Rushmore. MICHAEL JORDAN (Bulls, 1984-93, 95-98) Everyone knows that Jordan was a magical athlete and maniacal competitor. The list of accomplishments goes on and on 6-0 record in the NBA Finals, six Finals MVPs, five regular season MVPs, 14 All-Star games, 10 scoring titles. Those accolades only scratch the surface of the man who many deem to be the best athlete of all time. Beyond the freak athleticism, what sticks out to KC Johnson, who covered Jordan on a daily basis for the Chicago Tribune during the Bulls second three-peat, was how well Jordan understood the mental side of the game. I think of just how smart of a basketball player he was," Johnson says. "I think that sometimes gets overlooked because everyone just looks at his talent and his competitivene s. But his basketball IQ was ridiculous as well, and I think thats one reason why he connected so well with his coaches. If you look at the relationships he had not only with Phil Jackson , but dating back to college with Dean Smith, he always held the coaching position in such high regard because of his respect for the game and his ability to see the game. Jordans Bulls 3-peated to start the 90s thanks to his incredible scoring and high-flying dunks. The second three-peat was driven more by that genius basketball acumen rather than pure physical talent. Jordan kept his perch as the best scorer Fred Lynn Jersey in the league, but he did most of his damage in the post. He used superb footwork and an unstoppable fadeaway jump shot to dominate the league. He completely transformed his game with that back-to-the-basket and post arsenal that he had," Johnson says. "He still had that athleticism, and would remind you of how great he was at that. But his ability to economically shift his game to a different skill set is really noteworthy. Not a lot of players do that." It was Luis Tiant Jersey obvious to anyone who watched Jordan during that time that you were witne sing history. He took the game to places it had never dreamed of, and the outcome of the games were never in doubt when he was at his peak. I remember distinctly reminding myself to soak it in , covering him, because you just saw such greatne s and such succe s on such consistent levels that you never wanted to take it for granted," Johnson says. His 16,726 yards, since broken by Emmitt Smith, came off then-records of 10 seasons of 1,000 or more yards rushing and 77 games of 100 or more yards. His 275 yards rushing against the Minnesota Vikings in 1977 also set the single-game record at the time, and it came off a week of battling the flu. Its a game Johnson remembers well. Thats because he was in the stands as a distre sed 10-year-old, broken-hearted seeing the vaunted Purple People Eaters Vikings defense unable to stop Payton. Whats crazy about it is I grew up a Viking fan in Evanston. So I was openly angry that Walter Payton was making NFL history. Not even the elite defenses could stop Payton. They could get in his way, but they couldnt bring him down. His running style was a big reason to me why he connected with the Chicago fandom as well as he did, because while graceful, it also had quite a bit of power and strength and undeniability to it," Johnson says. "He had so many runs where he Nick Yorke Jersey 'd be dragging one, two tacklers." Back in those days, Chicago cherished its reputation as a tough, hard-nosed city. The 1985 Bears, the last team to win the Super Bowl, featured a rugged defense and Payton pounding the ball 4.8 yards per carry on offense. He was blue collar, and connected with the city in that realm," Johnson says. "His offseason workouts were legendary. He used to go to this hill and train and run up and down the hill to the point where he would puke. And he was very stoic. He could get in the end zone. And he just slipped the ball to the official, like, hey, I've been here before. He didn't have a lot of celebratory nature to him. He just got the work done. And that's one reason beyond his talent that the fan base loves him so much. He just fit the franchise to a tee. Paytons legacy as Roger Clemens Jersey a humanitarian remains. The NFLs Man of the Year award, given to the player who demonstrates outstanding contributions to society off-the-field while handling himself in an exemplary fashion in uniform, was renamed to the Walter Payton Award after his pa sing in 1999. We now are nearly two decades removed from the NBAs first epoch, ruled by big men Adam Duvall Jersey who could be identified by a single name: Ru s, Wilt, Kareem, Shaq. For the first half-century of the leagues existence, teams that did not feature such a player preferably one of them in particular had little chance to compete for its championship. Michael Jordan started to change that principle. Kobe Bryant and LeBron James continued the trend. Statistical analysis that emphasized the value of the 3-pointer, and Stephen Currys mastery of the art, sealed it. The NBA no longer is a centers league. Some teams barely bother to fill the position. And yet,the crucial matchup of the 2020 NBA Finalsis, um, at center. No, seriously. MORE: At 6-9, the Heats Bam Adebayo would not have been a center in yesterdays NBA, and he does not play the position anything like Ru sell, Chamberlain, Abdul-Jabbar or ONeal. (There are echoes of Bill Waltons game, but he yielded only one title for the Trail Blazers.) Adebayos astonishing versatility during these playoffs, and the difficulty for opposing teams in trying to control the wide variety of challenges he presents, is the greatest reason for Miamis surprising advance to the Finals and its near-dominance along the way. Adebayo frequently now functions as a point center, the offense flowing through his hands and developing off his moves and reads. He is an exceptional ballhandler at his size, which often disadvantages opposing big men with quick drives Alex Wood Jersey to the goal that end with a layup, dunk or feed, and he is an effective pa ser, averaging 4.9 a sists in 15 playoff games, 12 of which the Heat won. The thing with Bam, he handles the ball so well. Hes got so much confidence, Fox Sports and Big Ten Network basketball analyst Stephen Bardo told Sporting News. Whatever the read is, Bam can do it. They started experimenting Scott Feldman Jersey with him there early, and he got comfortable with it. And they saw the efficiency of the other guys that could fit with him rise. It opens the floor for everybody. Its been a revelation. The Lakers would seem to have the ideal counter for Adebayos talents in 6-10 Anthony Davis, who has a more traditional centers body in terms of height and length but who always has moved with the grace and quickne s of a smaller player. Davis consistently has expre sed thathe prefers not to operate as a center because it wears down his body; given that he is averaging 28.8 points with an effective field goal percentage of .600, it seems wise to adjust to his preference. For seven games, though, going against someonewho is 255 pounds rather than 284 like the Nuggets Nikola Jokic? Davis ought to be able to handle that. Bardo, whose frequently focuses on the NBA, doesnt believe Davis should, most of the time. He expects the Lakers will stick with Dwight Howard, whose prominence in the LA rotation grew during the five games against Denver in the Western Conference finals. Youll see Davis guarding Adebayo because of the motion offense nature of Miamis attack, so therell be switches. But the Lakers dontwant to have AD on Bam, because Bam will wear him out, Bardo told SN. I think its putting too much pre sure on Anthony Davis defensively. It gets into his legs. Whenever Nikola Jokic, in the previous series, was able to bang Anthony Davis in the first half, his production went way down in the second half. I think Frank Vogel and his staff see that. An excited, role-accepting Dwight Howard would be a much better option on the defensive end, in my opinion, against Bam Luis Castillo Jersey than Anthony Davis. Because you dont need Howards offense. You need Anthony Davis offense. I think what the Lakers would do is tell Howard: If youve got to give up Devin Mesoraco Jersey something, give up the jumper. Keep him out of the paint. Once he goes to the jumper, get a hand up and bother his shot. But when Bam starts putting it on the deck and getting into the paint, oh, its a nightmare. Bam can stick the shot, but he doesnt want to take eight or 10 jumpers a game. He wants the physical contact. He wants to get in the paint. I think Dwight Howard could do a pretty good job in terms of limiting his paint touches off the bounce. Using Howard would put Davis in some interesting individual matchups. With Lakers star LeBron James available to match against Heat star Jimmy Butler, it would mean Davis going against 6-7 wing Duncan Robinson, an expert shooter who spends his time on offense running through and around screens. Bardo believes rather than have Davis attempt to cope with all that traffic, the Lakers would execute a switching scheme on D. Its: Who can flip who? Bardo said. Miami wants to go smaller, and the Lakers are comfortable going big. How can you flip the matchup to your benefit? And I think Dwight Howard is the key. Bams going to get his, but if he doesnt go crazy, and people can stay at home where Robinsons not getting open looks, Tyler Herros not breaking guys off the bounce if they can stay home defensively, the Lakers have a big-time advantage. Obviously, with such players as James and Butler involved, and Herro now established as a reliable weapon, there will be plenty of other Yasiel Puig Jersey players whose performances will dictate the development of the 2020 NBA Finals. The center position, though, once again is at center stage. For Bam Adebayo to make this so is a heck of an upset before a game has been played.

The Toronto Raptors moved to 42-32 on the season with a 131-91 win over the Indiana Pacers on Saturday night. It's a landmark win as the Raptors have secured their eighth winning season in the last nine years. Toronto made its presence felt early and often, getting out to a 41-21 lead at the end of the first quarter and it never looked back, leading by as many as 42 points in the game. But it wasn't without hindrance. Due to an electrical Willie Calhoun Jersey fire at Scotiabank Arena with 4:05 remaining in the first half, there was a suspension of play for over an hour, resulting in a Robinson Chirinos Jersey precautionary evacuation of fans, who were unable to return once play resumed. MORE: The Raptors also took the precautionary measure of sitting Fred VanVleet for the remainder of the game to avoid taking a risk with his bothersome knee. In a performance that was dominant acro s the board, Precious Achiuwa first stole the spotlight, sinking a career-high four 3-pointers in his first 12 minutes of action. . CAN'T MISS 4/4 from the 3PT Toronto Raptors (@Raptors) Achiuwa would go on to finish with 18 points on 7 of 12 shooting from the field. Achiuwa's performance paced a season-best 62 points from the Raptors' reserves. Pascal Siakam led all scorers with 23 points, seven a sists, six rebounds and three steals. Toronto Raptors (@Raptors) Eight games now remain on the Raptors' regular-season schedule and they can realistically finish as high as fifth in the Eastern Conference they're in a three-team battle for playoff positioning with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls. The 2022 NBA trade deadline is set for Thursday, Feb. 10 and we're already underway. On Friday, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the LA Clippers have acquired Norman Powell and Robert Covington from the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Eric Bledsoe, Justise Winslow, Keon Johnson and a 2025 second-round pick (via Detroit). The Clippers are trading Eric Bledsoe, Justise Winslow, Keon Johnson and future second-round pick to the Trail Blazers for Norman Powell and Robert Covington, sources tell ESPN. Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) Who won the deal? We have you covered with some trade grades below. NBA LEAGUE PASS: Sign up to unlock live out-of-market Jon Berti Jersey games (7-day free trial) LA Clippers trade grade NBA Getty Images The Clippers are clear winners of this trade, there is no question about that. In Powell, LA receives one of the best 3-point shooters in the league. The 28-year-old is averaging 18.7 points per game this season while knocking down 2.3 3s at a 40.6 percent clip.averaging more points while shooting over 40 percent from 3 are All-Star big man Karl-Anthony Towns and Powell's former teammate CJ McCollum. Powell, meanwhile, gets to return close to his home in San Diego and rejoins two of his former Raptors NBA champion teammates in Kawhi Leonard and Serge Ibaka. In Covington, the Clippers land a 3-and-D forward who can defend multiple Bryan Holaday Jersey positions and even play small-ball center if needed. Covington was having a down year in Portland but he is a starting-caliber player in the NBA and his versatility gives head coach Tyronn Lue even more flexibility with this current Clippers roster. With Leonard (ACL) expected to mi s the entire season and Paul George (elbow) absent since the end of December, the Clippers have somehow still found a way to remain in the Western Conference playoff picture. The additions of Powell and Covington give them two more valuable pieces to remain competitive for this season, and they both fit perfectly next to Leonard and George when they are healthy in the future (if they re-sign Covington, that Sergio Romo Jersey is). As ESPN's Zach Lowe noted, this trade is more about next season than this season. This trade was a home run for the Clippers. This is a signal to the league we are coming in loaded next season." reacts to the Clippers' acquisition of Norman Powell and Robert Covington. NBA on ESPN (@ESPNNBA) Pulling this off while only giving up expendable players and a future second-round pick, this deal was a steal for the Clippers. Trade grade:A Norman Powell, Robert Covington contract details The Trail Blazers traded for Powell at last year's trade deadline, then signed the veteran wing Miguel Rojas Jersey to a five-year, $90 million contract extension this past offseason. That means Powell will likely remain with the Clippers for the foreseeable future. Covington is in the final year of a four-year, $62 million extension he signed with the Philadelphia 76ers back in 2017. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Portland Trail Blazers trade grade For the Trail Blazers, this deal is more about shedding salary and getting under the luxury tax. However, with that being said, they just traded two of their most valuable trade chips and only got a second-round pick along with the players they Jose Urena Jersey received in return. It is uncertain what type of future Bledsoe and Winslow have in Portland, but rookie first-round pick Keon Johnson is an intriguing addition as a high-flying wing with some future upside potential. Moving on from Powell's $90 million contract also frees up some cap space to re-sign breakout guard Anfernee Simons to a favorable extension this offseason, . All-in-all, ideally, Powell and Covington would have landed them at least one first-round pick, so they mi sed out there. Trade grade:D Eric Bledsoe contract details After this season, Bledsoe only has one year remaining on the four-year, $70 million extension he signed with the Milwaukee Bucks back in 2019. The final year of his deal is worth $19.4 million but only $3.9 million is guaranteed, making him Andre Dawson Jersey a likely buyout candidate for the Blazers to shed even more salary. Justise Winslow is only owed $4 million next season while Johnson is on his rookie-scale contract after being selected with the No. 21 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.

Suns guardChris Paul earned the 11th All-Star nod of his career with Tuesday night's official announcement of the Eastern and Western Conference reserves, but some players around the league feel one of his teammates should be joining him in Atlanta for this year's festivities. (UPDATE: That teammatewill be.) Devin Booker is averaging 24.7 Austin Meadows Jersey points, 4.3 a sists and 3.8 rebounds per game this season while shooting 50.1 percent from the field and 38.1 percent from 3-point range. Phoenix wasfourth in Corey Dickerson Jersey the West standings (20-10) entering Tuesday's slate of games, so the stats were hardly empty. Yet NBA coaches, who choose the reserves for the All-Star Game, didn't feel that was enough to put Booker ahead of Paul, Anthony Davis, Paul George, Rudy Gobert, Damian Lillard, Donovan Mitchell and Zion Williamson. NBA ALL-STAR 2021: Lakers forward LeBron James, who is one of the All-Star captains along with Kevin Durant, voiced his support for Booker and declared he is "the most disrespected player in our league." He also gave a shoutout to Lillard, who lost a tiebreaker with Luka Doncicfor one of the West's starting guard spots. Devin Booker is the most disrespected player in Jameson Taillon Jersey our league!!! Simple as that. LeBron James (@KingJames) Followed by Dame Dolla. Fireworks are coming, Im popcorn ready Reggie Miller (@ReggieMillerTNT) Hold up got Damn it!!! You mean to tell me Booker and Sabonis didnt make the All-Star team?! Thats just ridiculous. Real Talk! Kendrick Perkins (@KendrickPerkins) Booker may still have a chance to be an All-Star, though. In the case of an injury, NBA commi sioner Adam Silver can choose a replacement player. It is unlikely Davis will be able to appear in the All-Star Game , so that opens the door for Silver to undo a perceived snub. , Silver doesn't have to select a frontcourt player to fill Davis' slot, but the replacement must be a Western Conference player. Booker, perhaps? (UPDATE John Jaso Jersey : Booker, yes. The league .)

Boston icon Bill Ru sell was a five-time NBA MVP and 12-time All-Star who won an astounding 11 NBA titles in his 13-year career. This story, naming Ru sell The Sporting News' Athlete of the Decade for the 1960s, first appeared in the March 14, 1970, i sue of TSN. BOSTON, Ma s. More than anyone else, the past 10 years in sports belonged to one man center Bill Ru sell of basketball's Boston Celtics. It is on the basis of Ru sell's consistence and brilliance during this period that THE SPORTING News has chosen him as its Athlete of the Decade. The honor takes on added depth and meaning when you consider the finalists he had to beat out. They included Willie Mays in baseball, Johnny Unitas in football, Bobby Hull in hockey and Arnold Palmer in golf. All four had imposing credentials. Mays was THE SPORTING NEWS' choice as baseball's Player of the Decade for his outstanding accomplishments with the Giants. Among his feats, he finished the decade with 600 homers as the greatest right-handed slugger in Bryan Shaw Jersey major league history and second only to Babe Ruth in career total. Unitas was the dominant quarterback of the National Football League in a decade that saw the Baltimore Colts become a power through his pa sing efforts. He holds the records for most pa sing attempts, 4,456; most completions, 2,450; most yards gained, 35,502, and most touchdown pa ses, 266. The highest-paid player in hockey and also one of the most exciting, Hull was a fantastic scorer for the Chicago Black Hawks over the 10-year span. He led the National Hockey League in goals for the last four consecutive seasons of the decade. Despite holding out for a few weeks, he scored a record 58 goals in the 1968-69 season. Palmer, the first golfer to pile up a total of $1,000,000 in purse money, won almost every important championship in the decade, including the Masters tournament in 1960, 62 and '64 to go with an earlier triumph in the Augusta cla sic in 1958. Hara sed by a back ailment, he made a comeback and ended the decade by winning the last two tournaments on the pro tour in 1969. Blueprint for the Defense But Ru sell was deemed the finest of the five. He didn't just play a great 48 minutes of pro basketball; he influenced the entire defensive side of the Sam Hilliard Jersey game. Except in very rare instances, and then for only extremely short periods of time, does defense ever catch up with offense in sports. It was almost as though Big Bill strode majestically down Mt. Olympus to give defense its first permanent plus. Ru sell was an original. All those big centers with a flair for defense who have come after him are imitators. They may have had a book on one or two great defensive moves, but Bill was a whole library. "Until Ru sell came along, no one ever had blocked shots before in the pros or forced rival teams out of their regular offensive patterns," said Arnold (Red) Auerbach, the Celtics' general manager. "Bill put a whole new sound in pro basketball, the sound of his footsteps," Auerbach continued. "A guy would be going in all alone for a layup and then suddenly he'd hear these footsteps behind him. Even then he had to figure he was safe because there was nobody in Gerardo Parra Jersey front of him. Then, just as he'd put the ball in the air, this big arm would come snaking over his shoulder and knock the ball out of bounds. "After this happened a couple of times, guys on rival teams started hearing Ru sell's footsteps even when he wasn't there. Sometimes they'd blow layups. And it was because Ru sell had them thinking instead of shooting." Early in his pro career, it was fashionable to concede Bill his big edge on defense and on the boards and laugh at his shooting. Despite the fact that he is 6-10, Ru sell averaged only 14 points a game his first year in the pros and his foul shooting was terrible. The problem was that Bill always had concentrated on his defense and ignored his offense. Even in college, he spent very little time facing the basket. Auerbach's original instructions to him when he joined the Celtics were to "get me the ball and play defense. We've got enough shooters." Bill Polished His Shooting Yet, there is one thing you have to remember about Bill's offense. It improved rapidly. It was never spectacular. It had none of the crowd-pleasing aspects of Oscar Robertson or Jerry West going one-on-one. But it reached a point of effectivene s where it could not be ignored. Jon Gray Jersey After his first year, Ru sell's offense was nearly always there when it was needed to open up the middle, to break a tie, or to change the complexion of a playoff game. Bill was a joke shooting fouls when the Celtics were 20 points ahead, but in the clutch he was almost as much a guarantee at the foul line as Bill Sharman. Before Ru sell joined the Celtics in December of 1956 (after playing with the U. S. Olympic team), Boston had led the league in scoring five straight years. But, in the same period, the Celtics never had won a division title and had a habit of exiting early in the playoffs. In the next 13 years, with Bill Ru sell playing center, Boston won nine division titles and 11 world championships. Frank Ramsey left, Sharman left, Bob Cousy left, Tommy Heinsohn left, K.C. Jones left, but German Marquez Jersey as long as Bill remained, it was never: "Can the Celtics win again?" It was always: "By how much?" This is what Auerbach once told author George Plimpton about Ru sell: "The first time I saw him play after we landed him for the Celtics was with the 1956 Olympic team against an all-star team in College Park, Md. He was horrible. I thought, God, Ive traded Ed Macauley and Cliff Hagan for this guy! I sat there with my head in my hands. After the game, he came over to see me. He said he wanted to apologize hed never played like that before. I looked at him and I said I hoped he was right because if his play that night was any indication of his ability, then I was a dead pigeon. His first game as a pro wasnt much, either. Harry Gallatin of the Knicks just ate him up. Ru sell well, he didnt seem to want to hit anyone. Timid. Hed just been married and that doesnt do a guy any good. At last on a basketball court. So the next time we played the Knicks, I thought Id play Ru sell at corner and let Arnie Risen play center against Gallatin. Ru sell came to me and said he wanted to try again against Gallatin. Well, what a job he did on Gallatin maybe the guy got one shot on him, maybe two. Ru sell destroyed him. That's a word you can use about him he destroyed' players. Still vividly remembered is Ru sell's first pro game against Wilt Chamberlain. Blank Jersey It premiered before a sellout crowd at Boston Garden on November 7, 1959. Ru sell grabbed 35 rebounds and scored 22 points. Chamberlain had 28 rebounds and 30 points. However, Wilt took 38 shots and was only si

Editor's note: This story, by Jim Heffernan, appeared in the March 14, 1962, i sue of The Sporting News. HERSHEY, Pa. If you've ever talked to an NBA Asdrubal Cabrera Jersey coach immediately after his team has been the victim of one of Wilt Chamberlain's devastating point-making orgies, the odds are only even money that the dejected fellow closed out his tale of woe with these words: "Some day he'll score a hundred." Well, some day was Friday, March 2, 1962. In the small community where they make the world famous chocolate candies, Chamberlain made a shamble of all previous one-game scoring records of the 16-year-old National Basketball A sociation by scoring 100 points. MORE: The victims of this "impo sible" accomplishment were the New York Knicks, who also were the "Patsy" last year when Elgin Baylor scored 71 points for what was then also a record. Chamberlain's performance was simply amazing. Even the 7-1 Philadelphia Warrior star couldn't completely convey with words his feeling of joy. "Never Thought I'd Do It" "It's like nothing that ever happened to me before," he said excitedly. But if words wouldn't come, there was nothing that could hide the everlasting smile that covered his face from the moment he stuffed the 100th point through the net until he battled his way through a mob of young idolizers on his way out of the Hershey Arena. "No, I never really thought I'd do it," Wilt admitted to an inquisitor. "But I gue s everybody else did. I heard it and saw it written a hundred times. But I wasn't fool enough to say, or even believe, anything like that." Philadelphia Coach Frank McGuire was one of those on record as predicting Wilt's 100. "Remember back in December when he got the 78 against Los Angeles?" McGuire said Keon Broxton Jersey . "I told you guys (the reporters covering the Warriors' games) that he'd get 100 points some day. Forecast Made in Anger "Actually, I said that in a moment of anger. The Lakers had been playing three and four men on Wilt that night, and I was mad at the refs for not getting them off his back. "We all knew he was capable of 100. But begin to think just what it takes to score that much. Why if you or I went to a gym alone it would take us almost a half hour to make enough for a 100 points. "But tonight was a wonderful thrill. I remember the first time a team I coached scored a 100. Now this. It's almost unbelievable. He deserves all the praise in the world. "And," McGuire added, "it's a great tribute to his teammates." But Frank was a little late lauding the rest of the Warriors. Wilt already had done it. "It took a lot of effort for me, Chamberlain said in most sincere tones, "but it was just as big an effort for the team. It wouldn't have been close to po sible to do this if they didn't want it for me as much as I did. "That's what makes it so important to Jacob DeGrom Jersey me. They wanted me to do it, and so did the fans." Paul Arizin, the Warriors' 10-year veteran who ranks as the second-greatest career scorer in NBA history, shook his head in disbelief. "I never thought I would see it happen when I broke into the league," Arizin said. "But when Wilt came along, I knew he'd do it some day. "It's a fantastic thing. I'm very happy for him." Over in one corner of the dre sing room, substitutes Joe Ruklick and Ted Luckenbill were kidding each other about their part in the record. "Remember," Ruklick shouted to anyone within earshot, "Lucky got the rebound and I got the a sist." 20 A sists for Rodgers "I won't forget," Chamberlain responded. Guy Rodgers, who was credited with 20 a sists, explained it simply: "There wasn't an easier way in the world to get a sists tonight. All I had to do was give the ball to the Dipper." And little Al Attles, who had a perfect 8-for-8 night from the field and sank his only free throw attempt, kiddingly complained to Wilt: "Big fella, I'll have a mental block the rest of my life. I don't mi s a shot and Michael Conforto Jersey nobody even talks to me. "Well," Chamberlain reminded Attles, "you asked me before the game when I was going to take 60 shots in a game. Well, I took 63 tonight. So you see it's your own doing." Someone asked Wilt if he thought this record would ever be broken. "I'd hate to be the one to try and break it," he answered in revealing his wearine s for the first time. "It was funny tonight. I never thought of getting a lot of points, but when I made my first nine fouls (he actually made ten in a row), I thought it would be great if I could break the record for most fouls in a game. But then, going into the last quarter, we all knew I had a good chance at the 73 and 78. Chamberlain, who had 69 points at the end of three periods, referred to his own pair of single-game records: 73 in a regulation game against Chicago, Jan. 13, 1962, and 78 in a three-overtime game against Los Angeles, Dec. 8, 1961. Wilt quickly disposed of the regulation-game mark. He dropped in three baskets in the first two minutes of the final period to raise his total to 75. The fans began to chant: "Give it to Wilt. Give it to Wilt." With 7:51 remaining, Chamberlain Adeiny Hechavarria Jersey took a pa s from Rodgers and faded to the foul line for his 79th point. The 78 mark had been eclipsed. The fans who numbered a sparse 4,124 greeted the announcement with wild cheers, whistles and applause. Now the push was on. The Warriors began to feed the ball to Wilt even more than they had previously. Chamberlain reached 89 with more than five minutes left. One hundred was within easy reach. Knicks Fouled Warriors But the Knicks, too, knew it. And in an effort to avoid the ignominy of being the victim of such a rap, they began to hold the ball as long as the 24-second rule would permit. New York also managed to halt the Chamberlain onslaught temporarily by fouling the other Warriors before they could pa s the ball to Wilt. But Philadelphia Coach McGuire retaliated by sending into the game subs Ruklick, Luckenbill and York Larese. Their job: foul the Knicks in order for the Warriors to regain po se sion of the ball. So, with 2:45 to go, Wilt was on his way again. A free throw. Then another pair of singletons. A long fadeaway boosted Chamberlain's total to 94. The 96th came after he dropped a Robert Gsellman Jersey pa s from Rodgers, then recovered for another of his famous fadeaway shots from the pivot. Larese gave Wilt a high pa s and he dunked in 98 with 1:19 to go. The fans were on their feet and screaming. The players on the Warriors' bench squirmed. The tension was at its peak. Chamberlain intercepted the ensuing throw-in by the Knicks and mi sed a shot from the foul line. And after New York mi sed, the Warriors came down court and Wilt move
